Cherries - A Delicious Superfood
Cherries are regarded by many health professionals and nutritionists as a superfood. They contain almost as many antioxidants as blueberries. They are also one of the few food sources of melatonin. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone produced in the brain by the pineal gland. It plays a key role in regulating the body’s internal clock, and thus the sleep cycle.
Eating cherries for melatonin may be beneficial to people suffering from sleep disorders or insomnia, depression, those with poor vision, and the elderly.
If you are flying across timezones you may find cherries useful for helping you to adjust to the new timezone. If you are travelling west, eat the cherries the night before you fly. If you are travelling east eat cherries about half an hour before trying to sleep. Once you have arrived at your destination eat some cherries each night before going to bed until you have settled into the new time. (of course you can continue to eat them after that as they are delicious and beneficial.)
